Reading Books and Diaries

Reading is at the heart of what we do at St Luke’s, and it is especially important in Year 2 as children continue to develop their fluency, confidence and comprehension skills. We ask that children read regularly at home with an adult at least 3 times a week (this only needs to be a few pages) and this is recorded in their diary. Children will receive one house point if they read three times and 2 house points if they read 6 times in a week.

Please talk about the book with your child, asking questions about what they have read and encouraging them to explain their ideas. Once your child has read their book twice and shared it with an adult at home, they can return it to the designated box in the classroom and choose a new book. When the children move onto longer books, they need only complete their book once. Developing regular reading habits at home will support your child’s learning across the curriculum and help them become confident, enthusiastic readers.

Spellings

Children will be given their weekly spellings every Friday in their spelling books. They will have the week to practise these spellings at home, ready for their spelling test the following Friday. The test will take place in a separate book in school. Regular practice at home will help children to build their confidence and develop their spelling skills.

Times Tables Rock Stars

This year, children will have access to Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS), with their own individual login details. TTRS is a fantastic, fun and engaging way for children to practise and develop their times tables skills. Regular use at home will help build their confidence, fluency and speed with multiplication facts.
